chiefs reeling after police say linebacker jovan belcher killed his girlfriend then drove to arrowhead stadium and took his life in front of his coach and manager. martha: despite this tragedy. kansas city managed to play their scheduled game and as you would imagine it was a very emotional day for the players and the teams and the families and fans. after the game this is the scene. you can see the players alternating there. the teams gathering together as they huddled in prayer at mid field. >> we are grieving for all involved. it's tough when a circumstance happens, you can't undo them. so you have to rely on each other, rely on your family and friends and rely on your faith. that's what the team tried to do today and we were able to do that and work our way through the tragedy. >> the police investigation goes from here. it's hard to imagine how that team could witness a player suer suicide and take the field the next day. >> the head coach and gh have talked to police about it but declined to talk to the press after yesterday's game. >> i think that respectfully to you guys and la

the game. the death of linebacker jovan belcher and his girlfriend. a moment of silence just before the game today in honor of all the victims of domestic violence. no mention of belcher by name. police say belcher shot and killed his girlfriend cassandra perkins at their home and then drove to the chiefs training facility near arrowhead stadium, took out a gun and shot himself in front of his coach and general manager. belcher and perkins were parents of a three month old baby girl, who was in another room at the time of the shooting. she was not hurt. the chiefs won today. they beat the carolina panthers only their second win of the season. that's of course nearly over. following the game. players from both teams gathered at the center of the field in prayer. >> well, the taliban sparking a two hour gun battle at a joint u.s. afghan air base today. we're told two cars packed with explosions barreled toward the main gate of the air base in eastern afghanistan. one of the cars blew up at the gate and guards started shooting at the second vehicle before it also exploded and american

jovan belcher. as you well know belcher committed suicide after killing his girlfriend kasandra perkins on saturday. the couple leaves behind a 3-month-old daughter. perkins funeral is today in texas. jovan belcher's murder/suicide led to another controversy for the nfl this year. the league that has dealt with deaths of current and former players, concussions, high profile lawsuit and bounties. the question on sunday, should the chiefs have played the game with carolina just a day after belcher and kasandra perkins' deaths. that's just one topic that nfl commissioner roger goodell addresses in this issue of "time" magazine. the senior editor wrote the piece and joins us now. welcome. >> good morning, carol. >> so what did the commissioner tell you about belcher and the decision to play the game on sunday? >> yeah. you know, his reaction was -- he was stunned. he gets a phone call from his director of security and hearing the details and he can't believe what he's hearing. he starts to hit the phones and he knew that there was pressure not to play the game and there were thoughts on tha

jovan belcher killed his girlfriend an then drove to the kansas city chiefs stadium and killed himself in front of his coaches. let me be clear. we don't know the causes or reasons the reasons behind this tragedy in particular, but we have seen a large number of nfl players take their own lives over the last few years. studies have shown that some of these swidz can be attributed to something called cte. it's chronic traumatic encephalopathy. it's attributed to alzheimer's. some are attributing it to concussion-like injuries. there's new information out, a new study that's making a lot of news. what is in the study, and why is it significant especially in light of what we've just seen happen over the weekend? >> researchers, ashleigh, have been so curious to know what do the brains of these athletes with chronic -- it's the biggest study. it's the largest mof people. they looked at 68 brains on autopsy of people who died and had chronic traumatic encephalopattie. most were athletes. i think this is really going to explain what they found. the three brains on the left are normal brains.
